It choked him up the first time he saw it, and if he let it, it still did to this day. If he let it.

Alpha arrived at the little gate and opened it. Behind him, the Temple loomed above the treetops, white and majestic. Nearly every season someone wanted to build an addition—as an act of contrition or commitment. And who was he to prevent them? As a result, the structure was nearly twice the size of what they’d first built… and it continued growing.

He stepped through the gate and closed it behind him. Seeing the newspaper at his feet, he stooped to pick it up. The headlines read “East Amasses Troops.”

He rose with a slight groan, as much from his age as from the information. The Easterners had been part of the community until a dispute over the Law broke out. Originally, it had been a minor disagreement, but that didn’t stop it from festering until a splinter group formed. Refusing to accept the Council’s interpretations, they moved to another location and started their own community. A community that had grown and, according to rumors, was preparing to return and seize the Temple by force.

Alpha tucked the paper under his arm and wearily headed toward the porch. Only as he climbed it did he hear female voices. Saida and another. He opened the door and they stopped.

Saida, who sat at the kitchen table facing him, stiffened. “Alpha, you’re home early.”

He knew the other woman before she even turned. “Dad…” Her face was gaunt. There were dark circles under her eyes.

His throat tightened. With so many conflicting emotions it was difficult to breathe.

She forced a smile. “It’s been a while.”

“What—” His voice clogged. “What are you doing here?”

“Alpha…” Saida cautioned.

“I was—” Nyrah coughed and turned in her chair to better face him. “I was in the area.”

“Get out.” His voice trembled. Not with anger but with the battle raging inside him… loving father against Law Giver, impossible love against absolute justice.

He stepped toward her and Saida rose to her feet. “Alpha—”

“I said get out.”

“Alpha, how can you—”

Nyrah reached for her hand. “It’s okay, Mama.”

“No, it’s not okay,” Saida said. “You’re my daughter. Our daughter. And I will not let—”

“Leave. Now.”

“Nyrah placed her hands on the table and with effort pushed herself to her feet.

“She’s not well,” Saida cried. “She needs our help. She needs life units from the Temple.”

“You are willing to go to the Grid,” he asked, “to make payment?”

“The Grid will kill her!” Saida protested. “Can’t you see how weak she is?”

Alpha closed his eyes. He’d heard this argument more times than he could count. From more people than he knew. And his response could not be, must not be any different. “The Law is the Law,” he said. “Justice must be served.” “I’ve broken too much Law,” Nyrah answered. “I would have nothing left to give.”

The words came before he could stop them. “And who made that choice?”

“Alpha, how can you say that?”

“It’s okay, Mama. We knew that would be his answer.
